The biggest question of this article is what is Linux? So let us know. As you all know that today is the time of technological revolution. Every day new gadgets or electronics devices are coming in the market. Our lifestyle has been greatly affected by this. People are using gadgets for everything from communication and employment. We should not forget that it is because of electronics gadgets that a new revolution has emerged and we have become familiar with many new things.

These gadgets are actually like mini computers, in which some special programs i.e. Set of Instructions are inserted as to how that device will work. And to make these programs work, Operating System is used in gadgets.

No matter what gadgets you take, from smartphones to cars, from supercomputers to home appliances, from home desktops to database servers, the operating system is present everywhere in all of them.

There are many operating systems present in the digital world like – Android, iOS, Windows etc. Apart from all these operating systems, there is another operating system, which is mostly used in Electronic Gadgets and the name of that operating system is Linux. Even though we are not aware of it, we are always using it.

It has been more than 30 years since Linux was created. It first came among us since the mid-1990s and since then, due to its usefulness, it has been ruling almost all the devices and will continue to do so.

Most people do not know much about Linux Operating System. That is why today we have brought this article for you, in which you will be given all the information related to Linux. Therefore, read the article till the end, then let's start.

#1. What is Linux?

What is Linux? Complete information in detail.

Friends, like Windows, iOS and Mac OS, Linux is also an Operating System. Operating system is an interface between the user of a computer and the computer hardware, through which the user can easily interact with the computer. An operating system is a collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs.

Software cannot work without Operating System. Linux is the most popular and multi operating system, which manages all the hardware resources associated with your desktop and laptop.

Linux is a very popular version of Unix OS. It is a Free and Open Source Software, which means that a developer can use Linux Coding for free on the Internet by changing it as per his wish for commercial and personal use.

Linux Operating System was originally developed for personal computers, but later this Operating System is used on many platforms like mobiles, smart TVs, gaming consoles and even vehicles. Linux is an operating system similar to Unix and is most commonly used in servers and computer system devices.

#2. Who created Linux and when ?

Friends, Linux Operating System was developed by Linus Torvalds in the year 1991 and it was released by AT & T's Laboratories under General Public License (GPL). When Linus was a student at the University of Helsinki, he was using an operating system called MINIX, a version of the Unix operating system.

When Linus and some users found that by making some changes in MINIX, this operating system could work even better. Then he requested its creator Andrew S. Tanenbaum to make changes and improvements in MINIX, saying that these changes were not necessary and he did not make changes in it. This was the time when Linus decided to create his own operating system, which would take into account users' comments and suggestions for improvements.

Linus was a student of C Programming Language, so he started writing code in C Language. About 95% of the code of Linux Operating System was written in C language and the rest of the coding was written in Assembly Language and other languages. After preparing the coding, Linus named that Operating System by adding the first 4 digits of its name i.e. Linu and the last digit of Unix i.e.

Linux was designed to be compatible with Unix. That is why many functionalities are similar to Unix. Linux and Unix are similar in many ways, but Unix is also not. Whereas Linux is available for free. Apart from this, Linux is a very reliable operating system for computers because it provides good security features, which provide the facility to keep the user's files and data confidential such as password protection and control access.

#3. How many components are there in Linux?

The three main components of Linux operating system are Hardware, Kernel or Shell or System Utility. What is their function and why are they important for Linux Operating System? Let us tell you about this also.

1. Hardware

The first component is hardware, in which peripheral devices like Ram, Hard-Disk Drive and CPU together form the hardware layer for the Linux operating system.

2. Kernel

This is the main part of Linux. It is responsible for all the major activities of this operating system. It interacts directly with the internal hardware. The kernel provides services to hide lower level details of the hardware in the system or application program.

3. Shell

Shell is an interface between the user and the kernel. It hides the complexity of the kernel's functions from the user. It accepts the user's commands and also takes action on them.

System Utility provides services to the user to use operating system-like functions. Individual and special functions can only be accessed through system utilities.

#4. What are the best features of Linux?

Linux Operating System is much better than other operating systems and it has many features, but here we will tell you about only a few features, about which you all should know.

1. Linux is an open source operating system, so it is available absolutely free to use on the Internet. Which any user or developers can change as per their convenience. Through this, we can increase the working capacity of this OS and make it better.

2. Portability is one of the main features in Linux Operating System. Which made Linux so popular among its users, but portability does not mean that this system is small in file size and can be carried in pen drive, CD, memory card. No, no. Instead, portability here means that the Linux OS and its applications can work in the same way on different types of hardware.

The Linux kernel and application programs support their installation even on very minimal hardware configurations, allowing you to revive even your old computer.

3. Linux is a multi-user and multi-programming operating system, in which more than one user can access and use the computer's hardware simultaneously.

4. Multi-tasking features are also available in Linux, so that a user can run more than one program, task or software at the same time.

5. Security is an important part of any operating system. For those organizations or users who are using the system for their confidential work. Linux provides many security concepts to its users to protect their data and systems from illegal access. It is a completely problem-free operating system and it does not contain any problems like Virus or Malware, which can slow down the speed of your computer.

#5. Where is Linux used?

Thousands of companies and governments around the world are using Linux Operating System due to its affordability, low cost licensing and saving time and money. Companies like Google, Amazon, and Facebook use Linux to secure their servers because it is a highly reliable and stable operating system.

Linux is used not only in personal computers, laptops and chrome books, but also in small gadgets like PDAs, mobile phones, smart watches, digital storage devices, cameras etc. Linux is used in many electronic devices like – DELL Laptop, HP Laptop, Lenovo Laptop, Google Android Phone, Motorola Phone, Sony BRAVIA TV, Sony Reader etc.
